Collection: Morris Sokolsky

American, 1932-1977

Oil on canvas

Sokolsky was an American painter from Baltimore, Maryland, whose brief life produced a haunting body of abstract and surrealist work that has gradually gained recognition in the decades following his death.

Sokolsky worked during a period of significant artistic ferment in American art, when abstract expressionism was giving way to new movements and regional artists were developing distinctive voices outside major art centers like New York. His work reflects both the influence of mid-century abstract expressionism and surrealism, while maintaining an intensely personal quality that sets it apart from mainstream trends of the era.

Though he worked in relative obscurity during his lifetime, his paintings have found their way into prestigious collections, including a permanent place at the Baltimore Museum of Art.
